Good evening. Joseph here, and I’m bringing you the newest releases in Bluray for March 12, 2013. This week’s episode features a screen legend come to life, a spectacular display of CGI, a slept on animated hit, two classic films in their own rights, and the hunt for a murderer of historic proportions. All settled in? Let’s get this show on the road.
Hitchcock (PG-13)

No, this isn’t the Will Smith movie. This movie centers on the relationship between director Alfred Hitchcock (Anthony Hopkins) and his wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren)during the making of “Psycho,” spanning from Wisconsin murderer Ed Gein, the real-life inspiration for the character of Norman Bates, to the release of the groundbreaking film in 1960. This movie comes in a two disc Bluray/DVD combo…that’s it, that’s the list. This is a great look at the history of a great film. I highly recommend checking it out.
Life of Pi (PG)

Based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martel, is a magical adventure story centering on Pi Patel (Suraj Sharma and Irrfan Khan), the precocious son of a zoo keeper. Dwellers in Pondicherry, India, the family decides to move to Canada, hitching a ride on a huge freighter. After a shipwreck, Pi finds himself adrift in the Pacific Ocean on a 26-foot lifeboat with a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan and a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, all fighting for survival. This Academy Award winning movie comes in a three disc 3D Bluray/Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version, a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. This is a cinematic masterpiece, both in story and effects, and it gets my pick of the week.

Based on a book series named “The Guardians of Childhood”, the film tells a story about the Guardians (North or Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, Bunnymund or the Easter Bunny, and the Sandman), who enlist Jack Frost to stop Pitch from engulfing the world in darkness. It features the voices of Chris Pine (Jack Frost), Alec Baldwin (Santa Claus), Hugh Jackman (The Easter Bunny), Isla Fisher (The Tooth Fairy) and Jude Law (Pitch). This movie comes in a three disc 3D Bluray/Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version, a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version with two hopping egg toys as a bonus, and a single disc DVD with the same two hopping egg toys. This is a cute movie that got overlooked by the avalanche of Disney and Pixar, but it’s certainly worth a watch – if for any other reason but to see the new look at classic characters.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit: 25th Anniversary Edition (PG)

It’s 1947 Hollywood and Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) a down-on-his-luck detective, is hired to find proof that Marvin Acme, gag factory mogul and owner of Toontown, is playing hanky-panky with femme fatale Jessica Rabbit, wife of Maroon Cartoon superstar, Roger Rabbit. When Acme is found murdered, all fingers point to Roger, and the sinister, power-hungry Judge Doom (Christopher Lloyd) is on a mission to bring Roger to justice. Roger begs the Toon-hating Valiant to find the real evildoer and the plot thickens as Eddie uncovers scandal after scandal and realizes the very existence of Toontown is at stake! This classic film comes in a two disc Bluray/DVD in either Bluray or DVD packaging. This is a wonderful film that’s full of fun and intrigue – not to mention ahead of its time, and I can’t recommend it enough.
Willow: 25th Anniversary Edition (PG)

When young Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis) finds an abandoned baby girl, he learns she is destined to end the reign of the wicked Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh). In order to protect the child, Willow must team up with a rogue swordsman (Val Kilmer) and overcome the forces of darkness in the ultimate battle of good versus evil! This Ron Howard directed movie comes in a two disc Bluray/DVD set. This movie is also fun, and it’s a bona fide cult classic. Everyone involved looks to be having the time of their lives, and this is one of those movies you have to watch at least once.
Haunted by the failure to catch London’s most evil killer, Jack the Ripper, Inspector Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) now heads up the notorious H Division: the toughest police district in the East End. Charged with keeping order in the blood-stained streets of Whitechapel, Reid and his men find themselves fighting to uphold justice and the rule of law; but always in the background lurks the fear of the Ripper. Is he back for another reign of terror? This series comes in both a two disc Bluray version and a three disc DVD version. We here at VaginaCon love anything from the BBC, and this is no exception.
